Customer ratings and reviews for HP Scanjet G4050 Photo Scanner

Rated 4 out of 5 by Good performance for the price I purchased this to scan film based x-rays for a dental office. The software could have more selections for the image being scanned as sometimes when it scans a large panoramic film, it thinks it is several smaller images and creates crop boxes around the lighter areas. I have to delete all but one and then expand the box and then it takes the whole image. Also, when I open it from the dental image management software, it will first automatically scan it as a photo, then I have to manually set it to film positive and rescan. There maybe a way to set a default to that but haven't figured it out yet. For the price it does what I need, but it could be more convenient. December 10, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Phenomenal Scanner I am able to do simple to intricate scanning with this scanner. Also my parents were able to use it easy enough so the software is intuitive as it is functional. Its easy to use software packed with great features makes this a winner!!! September 27, 2011
Rated 1 out of 5 by ScanJet G4050 Defective Software I bought the HP Scanjet G4050 to digitize old family photos. My goal was to replicate the look, display the ageing, duplicate the antiquity, and come up with a scan that looked as close as possible to the old original photo. After the Scanjet G4050 does the initial scan a screen comes up showing the “original scan” with another tab for “single image”. In all cases the “original scan” is very close to the original. The “single image” page displays the “final image”. This is the image that results after HP software “enhances” the photo. The “original scan” is perfect … the only problem is that is not what you will end up with. Your digital file (JPG, TIFF, etc) will be the “final image” and you cannot save the “original scan” to a digital file. There is no way to disable this “enhancement”. In all cases my old antique photos had a predominate green hue. You can edit, adjust, and minimize the green hue but you can never get the “final image” to look anything like the original. I tried every single option, adjustment, and setting and the results are the same … LIMEADE GREEN HUE PHOTOS. I worked with HP technical support for over an hour where they controlled my computer remotely and the determination was that the Scanjet was working up to specifications. In other words this scanner WILL NOT correctly scan your old, aged, slightly faded photos. However the Scanjet did a excellent job on documents and a good job on color photos. Also you can turn your photos into a black and white or grayscale. July 25, 2011
Rated 2 out of 5 by The scan software does not work. Although the scanner works (slowly), the software features do not. You can only use it on simplified scans. When you try to use the multi-picture scans and editing features, the software locks up and dumps the scans. The help menus that follow are laughable and useless -- e.g. reboot your computer. I am using a new HP TouchSmart 300 running Windows 7 and have two HP scanners, the g4050 and an All-in-one, and the software fails on both. HP needs to update/fix its scan software before I would recommend any of their scanners. I guess I'll have to find some real scan software that actually works. July 8, 2011
Rated 1 out of 5 by Do not buy this one! i HAVE PREVIOUSLY OWNED 3 SCANNERS AN THIS IS THE WORST. iNTITIALLY EXTREMELY SLOW AND NOW DOES NOT WORK AT ALL. 3 TIMES CHAT SUPPORT AND SIGNING ON TO MY PC WAS ABSOLUTELY NO HELP. June 26, 2011
Rated 1 out of 5 by Linux & Mac users: caution This scanner is not supported on Linux as of this date. From what I have read on the web HP hardware is problematic on Linux; some works fine, some not at all. To be safe check the Linux O/S your are using to see if any HP hardware you want to use is compatible. The scanner works on my MacBook Pro under Snow Leopard to some extent. Documents are scanned fine. But the software for scanning slides was crufty at best. You may want to consider some other software if you really want to use this scanner. Scanning large document was problematic. I was unable to save files reliably. I needed to break up larger documents [> 50pages] in to smaller ones. Admittedly this is not a common problem. But I though I should mention my experience. Basically I would buy a different scanner if I had it to do all over again. June 18, 2011
