Customer ratings and reviews for HP Scanjet G4050 Photo Scanner

Rated 2 out of 5 by skip this scanner if you want to scan slides the scanner worked ok the first day, but scanning slides at a decent resolution for printing larger was a fiasco. none of the images came out good at all. then i used the twain driver and they worked well, but i bought a new computer with windows 7 and the updated software apparently either hid or removed the twain option because now i can't get any decent results no matter how i change the settings. it's very slow using the 6 color option but the slide results are not worth the time it took to create the scan. and before anyone says its the slides, i'm using slides that were professionally captured with high quality images on them. i just wanted a scanner that could reproduce them digitally without issues. and good luck trying to get hp support about what to do in this situation. these scanners are only good for novices who are impressed with the technology that allows a paper image to show up on the screen. if you want serious results, you'll be disappointed. i just wish i could send it back. Rated 4 out of 5 by Great value for price I have this scanner primarily to scan large format 4x5 color transparency film. The quality I get from these scans compared to other flatbed scanners at 3-5 times the price is amazing. Yes, you must also be proficient in Photoshop, which is the case with scanning any film on any scanner if your primary output will be prints. The scans from this scanner will NOT compete with high end professional drum scans, but I have had very beautiful prints made up to 20x24" from this scanner. Flatbed scanners are NOT the best method for scanning 35mm slides or negatives, so I won't comment. Scanning slides or negatives are inherently slow. When scanning a 4x5 transparency at 2400ppi and 16-bit, the resulting files are over 500MB! I don't expect to scan this is 5 seconds. The preview feature with this scanner is fast though. Scanning documents, prints and all the other typical scanning functions work great also with this scanner. I have had this scanner for nearly 2 years with no issues. January 18, 2010
Rated 3 out of 5 by Unable to use with Windows 7 I have been exasperated trying to get software for my G4050 that will work with Windows 7. Everything that I download gets to a place where it is not compatible for Windows 7 even though HP says it is---it does not work! HP has had plenty of time to put out new drivers and software to get this recently built scanner up and running with Windows 7 and they have failed to do it. I will not buy another HP nor would I recommend you to buy The Scanjet G4050 until HP comes out with software to make it work if you are moving up to or already have Windows 7!!! January 16, 2010
Rated 1 out of 5 by photo scanner This item was the biggest waste of money I ever spent. I should have known by the price that it would not prefrom well. It does not scan slides at all. If you use the proper setting (slides) every one is black and it takes at least a half hour to correct. If you use the flim option it will scan the slides but changes the color and it can not be corrected. It did work ok for simple doc's but I already had an hp all in one for that. Now not even that works correctly. Says that there is a bulb error for 5/6 times and then it will finally scan. If you tell it you want a preview first you better have about 6 hours to spare. i still have my photosmart s20, which was excellent, but it is no longer compatible with any newer computers. Rated 1 out of 5 by There are no drivers available for this scanner I purchased this scanner based on the fact that the HP website says that the scanner is Windows 7 ready. However, there are no drivers for this scanner. The work-around from HP Tech Support was to download drivers for the old G2410 scanner. But after loading this driver, the only function available is a simple scan...no OCR functions, no slides or negative scanning, not even scan to print was available. I will be returning this scanner. Once drivers are available, I will consider repurchasing it as this scanner gets high marks from other on-line reviews. November 18, 2009
Rated 1 out of 5 by Very slow This is a very slow scanner, if you want to use it for the highest resolution 4800x It takes 25 min to scan a 3.5"x4" black and white picture in the best resolution they offer. The scanners keeps giving you warnings that you should use a lower resolution. Why then did I pay $215 ??? If I wanted a 300x or 600x resolution I would have bought a cheap scanner. Very archaic, crude to use. I am returning mine. November 16, 2009
