Customer ratings and reviews for HP Scanjet G4050 Photo Scanner

Rated 3 out of 5 by No race horse. I previously used a HP Pavilion PC with a HP 5300c scanner. I use my system, a lot, for Family History research & scan a lot of documents & photos. I purchased a new Pavillion pc (with Windows 7) & discovered my old 5300c would not work with Windows 7. So I purchased the new G4050. The G4050, with its "HP Solution Center" software is like a turtle compared to the 5300c. Scanning documents or images to a "save as file" is cumbersome. Wish I could use my old 5300c system. Rated 5 out of 5 by Love This Scanner We have this scanner at my place of employment. I have used it extensively on the Mac at work and love the ease of scanning documents. I like the scanner so much I bought one for home use. It is easy to use on both a PC and Mac. I like the software for the Mac better. A great scanner. I would highly recommend it. December 3, 2010
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great features ...but hangs up occasionally I have been mostly happy with this scanner. I had an earlier HP scanner and it worked great but could only scan 5 or 6 slides at a time. This one can scan 16 at a time plus larger photo negatives. I have had it hang up a couple of times and have had to shut everything down and reboot. I don't know if there is an update to software for this product or not. November 5, 2010
Rated 4 out of 5 by be careful! this is a great scanner, had it for a week scanned all my old slides so far, did a great job. BUT BEWARE, hp's software literally sucked all my personal photos/graphics from every place on my pc and left my files empty! i didn't know that at the time so i deleted my personal stuff from the hp file, but when i went to my own files they were empty! all my pics from ten years of sorting and saving were gone! fortunately, i had a recent copy i had backed up on an external hard drive, it could have been catastrophic. and fortunately i had my own cd's of the game graphics it also took, just re-installed them all. hp has no business sucking out all my own files/photos/pics, leaving my files EMPTY and moving them to their own hard to figure out software! i only wanted to scan! very time consuming fix! Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Product I bought this product to scan in all of the hundreds of 35 mm slides from when I was in service military and haven't looked at them in over 40 years. Its ease of use and filing system is wonderful. It does all that I could hope for. October 8, 2010
Rated 2 out of 5 by A big disappointment THIS SCANNER AND SOFTWARE DOES NOT RELIABLY SCAN MULTIPLE BLACK AND WHITE NEGATIVES. It crashes. Often. I know I am NOT the average scanner user. I own three computers and have owned a number of printers and scanners. This one is a disappointment folks if you are looking to scan multiple black and white negatives at the same time. I replaced the scanner and reinstalled the software several times, which didn;t help or change my assessment. WHAT IT SEEMS TO DO WELL It seems to scan multiple positive images well. The preview comes up, you draw a box around the areas you want to scan and presto! WHAT IT CAN'T SEEM TO DO THAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO DO Multiple negative Black and white images. Stick them in the supplied holders, wait for it to do it's default positive scan (annoying that I can;t figure how to make the default a negative film scan...wasting a lot of time). Change it to a negative scan, wait wait wait for the rescan (why the delay? Never seen this in a scanner before). Select the areas to be scabnned....make some adjustments in the settings and press finish. And every time it craps out before completing the scans, offering helpful (?!) instructions of resetting the scanner, reinstall the software, etc. Never worked on my 64 bit System Seven PC and this obne, despite its potential, goes back to the store for a refund. CONFUSING AND LIMITED CONTROL SETTINGS Negatives that would scan on other scanners, this scanner seems to wash out or is unable to capture the detail unless it is perfect. Really odd. Yeah, you can use Photoshop after, but honestly, if the scaqnner didn;t capture the detail well to start, no amount of Photoshop folling will fix that. A lot of potential because of the full page transparency option. But unless you want to try to capture them one at a time, this is just a problematic design. September 27, 2010
