Customer ratings and reviews for HP Chromebook 11-1101

Rated 5 out of 5 by Chromebook delivers As other reviewers have stressed, Chromebooks are eclectic and have limited use. You need to understand this going in. They are a true hybrid not a laptop. It is the price point that makes them attractive and once you learn your way around, you can maximize the functionality. You have to play awhile. Being online is basically essential. I have not mastered the offline features yet. Online you can browse the web, view email, store and retrieve documents in Google Drive, create documents, spreads and slide decks with Google provided tools. The free 100GB of storage is a huge plus in making this a value, as is the 12 free in-flight wi-fi usage, and I think you get photo storage too. Thus, you can play and you can work. The machine design itself is very pleasing. Some don't like the plastic, but I do as it keeps this device incredibly light. This is a huge factor with me to keep my gear light. I like the sleek white design and especially like that stable, comfortable keyboard. I don't have to drag around an extra component like I do with a tablet. The on button is amazing, Chrome OS is up in seconds, literally. I got the blue and white. As a new user, I actually bookmarked the keyboard shortcuts because there are some right click features I have to relearn, but that is minor. I wanted a workhorse for travel in particular, but find myself grabbing this over my tablet at night to mess around. Nice surprise. All and all, it serves for work and play. Sky Drive also works well through the browser, and I have Office 365, so that works great, too. Though Google does give you their own apps. I have not really shopped the apps much, but look forward to more development there. Listen, for the price, it is what it is. I could not be more pleased as the days of clunky laptops are long gone. I would not pay more for this device, given its limits, but it is definitely well constructed and thought out. Nice. October 31, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by ChromeOS portable with IPS screen First time chromebook user here. Up to this point I have used low end windows laptops. This laptop was surprisingly good compared to them. The screen is awesome. I have to say it again, the screen is awesome because of the large vertical viewing angles. Horizontal viewing angles are important if you are sharing your screen with someone is sitting next to you. Vertical viewing angles are very very important for the quality of image that you see. I have previously been subject to cheap TN panels on the laptops I have used and these result in poor vertical viewing angles. A poor vertical viewing angle means that I see the colors shift at the top and bottom of a screen no matter how I position the screen. This color shift appears as if portions of the image are seen as if they are a photographic negative of the actual image. This laptop has a decent quality IPS panel which doesn’t suffer from this problem. It is fantastic to get accurate color top to bottom, no screen fiddling necessary. You see the screen as it was meant to be seen. IMHO it’s worth sacrificing a faster cpu and more ram for an IPS screen. It’s that good. The keyboard is nice as well. It is a nice full size keyboard which means I can touch type on it at full speed. In addition, it has useful keys in place of the function keys that are found on a typical windows keyboard. For example, there are keys for expanding a browser window to full screen, going forward, backward and reloading a page. I actually use these while browsing instead of hunting for a icon or menu item. I am a bit of a tinkerer and I like debian and I was able to install debian to run along side chrome os easily. I booted into developer mode, logged into the system using my google credentials, downloaded crouton, opened a crosh shell (ctrl-alt-t), invoked a bash shell (“shell”) and then used the command “sudo sh -e ~/Downloads/crouton -r wheezy -n debian -t lxde” to install a nice debian lxde chroot. A quick “sudo startlxde” in the bash shell booted the debian chroot. From inside this debian chroot I installed abiword, gnumeric, evince (pdf viewer), hardinfo, and geany. From within chrome OS a quick cntl-alt-shift-forward (forward at the top of the keyboard, not the lower right) switches me to the debian chroot where I can access these programs. Cntl-alt-shift-back switches back to chromeOS from the chroot. The chromeOS and the chroot share the Downloads folder so it is easy to use the same files from each OS environment. Search the web for “ubuntu chromebook” and find the article on lifehacker or how-to-geek for more info on crouton, entering developer mode and chroots. October 25, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Love the Screen & Design I've purchased 4 HP Laptops, all top of the line products and mistakenly the biggest dog, an HP Mini, and I was very pleased with the look and feel of the HP Cromebook. Right out of the box to connecting with my wireless network, logging on to my Google account and joining a hang out took about 2 minutes. One concern with HP was wireless connection speed so I streamed a few HD videos on YouTube and found that my signal was strong enough 2 floors above my router to stream 720P with no buffering. The screen was plenty sharp for an 11"screen with bright colors. I also have a 17"Envy with HD antiglare screen, HP's best to compare and I was surprised that the difference wasn't as dramatic as I expected. So for the money the Cromebook really delivers a great browsing experience. The keyboard feels sturdy, not at all flimsy. Overall for such a thin device there is a ruggedness about it I really didn't expect. The sound is Ok, comes through the keyboard, but right away I plugged in headsets and that makes a huge difference. For browsing, social media, youtubing, emails, and video chats, this little guy is really hard to beat. Just so easy to use and if you need support you are calling Google not HP so even that is going to be a fraction of the time to get a result. Anyone who's called HP knows what I'm talking about.
