Customer ratings and reviews for HP ENVY 17t-j100 Leap Motion QE CTO Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR)

Rated 4 out of 5 by Unexpected Workmanship I am not a fan of W8...prefer W7....however, as I continue to operate the laptop, I do appreciate W8. What I am not thrilled with, if I close a program from the upper left corner of the screen, it is still open in the back ground and resources are operating, so I am forced to use Task Manager. I do appreciate the APP front page. A lot better than the old scroll in former Windows versions. AND you can customize the categories...making programs you use the most at your fingertips. Also, the heat on the CPU and the lap tops ability to remain cool is the best so far. I am not playing games, just admin and web surfing tasks. It remains cool. This was a nice surprise. I had an HDX 16 HP laptop and heat was horrible. Glad Intel and HP discovered a better way to manage the heat issue. I have however, purchased a Chill Mat with a 160 cm fan....for personal reasons. I don't expect a heat issue :). Otherwise... I like the weight of the 17" Envy, the overall stability, and screen size. I do recommend a touch screen for W8. It will assist in faster decision to operation performance for the user. Also... the mouse pad...requires deliberate pressure to "click" the mouse...and could be smoother. I find this performance annoying as an end user. The LEAP function is cool for the imagination. I wish it could be used like a touch screen reality. Its not, its more like a WII functionality...but its cool to toy with and online games. Not a administration reality which it can be. That is a programmer's goal. LETS" GET IT ON PROGRAMER! That is my honest review. I hope you can appreciate it. May 28, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Very good full size laptop I purchased my Envy 17t after reading several of the reviews, so I was aware of the limitations of the Leap Motion feature ... but I also felt good about everything else. After using my Envy 17t for a couple months now, I am very happy with my purchase decision. Performance and features (aside from Leap Motion) are outstanding. The only "complaint" I have, which is one others have also pointed out, is that the left side of the keyboard ("A", "S", etc. keys) has a spongy/flex feel . The right side of the keyboard feels solid, the same as the entire keyboards on my two other HP laptops. This really should have been addressed in the product design stage. Nevertheless, the keyboard is perfectly functional ... and, for my usage purposes, it's more of a minor irritation than a real problem. Switching back to everything that's right, the display is beautiful, the processing speed is superb, the storage capacity is outstanding ... at the actual price point, I'd quickly purchase this same laptop again. Rated 4 out of 5 by Excellent, only marred by the AG Display Pros: 1. A lot of hardware for a very fair price, 8GB RAM, dual HDD's (mine were both WD drives!), Quad Intel CPU, NVIDIA 750M, webcam, fingerprint reader, bluray drive w/cyberlink software, backlit keyboard, and repairable / upgradable (HDD's/RAM/Battery) 2. The LGD03FB (Anti-Glare version) panel that I got has excellent viewing angles (top, left, right) from the extreme bottom, it does darken significantly -- but who looks at it from that angle? Cons: 1. LGD03FB (PnP ID) panel has white grid lines. It looks like your seeing everything through a grid. Just for this I'm debating about returning it. Why can't they have quality retina screen like the MBP's use as an option :( I'd pay for that in a heartbeat. No matter how great the H/W, the monitor is critical. It's sad, smart phones get better screens than PC LCD's monitors (regardless of Laptop / Desktop based) 2. No built-in VGA/DisplayPort -- only ONE video out, which is a full-size HDMI port. Keep that in mind if you want to use multiple desktop monitors instead of the laptop screen. I wish it had a display port so I could daisy chain two external monitors together. 3. Very bad keyboard flex. Pressing the alpha keys on the left hand side of the keyboard causes that section of the keyboard to flop around. Wow. It's 2014. Really? 4. Doesn't open nicely, you have to hold the base while opening the lid. 5. No blue tooth (as least no option on the per-configured model I selected, so look for it, if it doesn't say it has it on the network card, it wont) Other: 1. I wish the case was metal based / reinforced, there's some flex when moving/handling it. 2. Fan can get loud when using the 750M NVIDIA GPU, but that's expected. 3. Sound is OK, nothing great...heard better with using Harmon/Kardon speakers on another laptop. I wish they unlicense "beats" and use that money saved per unit for a quality IPS display. 4. Strange occurrence where when I used the track pad, it would generate a "pop" sound through the speakers -- only happened once until I rebooted which seemed to clear it. 5. Leapmotion -- I don't use it, and I find it gimmicky. Again, I wish they would invest more in a quality display than gimmicks. Final thoughts: You get a lot of H/W for a very fair price and it's fast (development, video processing, etc...), but the display is the only issue I have this envy laptop -- while the color/viewing angles are really nice, the grid lines really ruin the experience -- it's makes everything look like a puzzle put together with little square blocks with white lines around each piece. Rated 4 out of 5 by Good except for the Leap function This computer is being pushed on the public before it is ready. The supposedly best feature is the worst feature. This Leap program is not ready for public use and needed to spend more time in the Engineering and Test phase. I had to go to the supposed experts HP has to explain and show you how to use the program. I was with him for over an hour while he had to research steps along the way. I will give him credit for knowing as much as he did because I went through a few phone numbers and technicians before someone said he could help me. Yesterday I was ready to box this device up and ship it back but I let my Son go through the programs and he was impressed with Windows 8.1 64 from his version of 8. He was pleased with the quickness and easiness it was to go through the different programs and felt the Windows had made a big Leap (no pun intended). and told me to complement those who changed it. Now that is from someone who has a vast knowledge of computers and their good and bad points. He convinced me to give it a few more weeks to see if I could adapt to the computer and said as far as he was concerned this was an excellent computer as far as he could tell in the short time he had to use it. so, that being said, I will hold on to this Leap computer and spend more time trying to find the real Expert on the system. I will say I felt like I was getting used to Windows 8,1 64 and do go along with comments from my Son and add to that, that I do like the sound system and all the special features this computer has on it. I would make comments on my calling to exchange this computer but it seems I could not get another one that fit most of my upgrades, not more upgrades just the ones I have. I will also comment on the majority of the technicians I have talked to on this device as well as my past device and want you to know you have many good people working for you. Keep that part up and you will continue having satisfied customers. Respectfully, William R. Dunkerley. April 30, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by I love this computer. I love the ability to change the size so I can read it easily. Windows 8.1 is awesome. April 29, 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by overheats under graphics load the laptop seemed like a good bang for the buck & works great for surfing & email. however, i upgraded to the nvidia geforce gt750m with 4gigs of mem and later realized it was money down the drain as the graphics cards overheats within minutes when under load causing the audio & video of the laptop to become unresponsive. hp provided inadequate cooling for the graphics card. also i have frequent problems with the wifi going out where other wifi devices in the same room work fine. i've tried both N & G networks. i'm considering upgrading my wifi card. save you money on the leap-motion. it's neat unfortunately but has no use.
