Customer ratings and reviews for HP ENVY 17t-j100 Leap Motion QE CTO Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR)

Rated 5 out of 5 by Large and light I love the large screen. It is much lighter than my previous HP Pavilion with the same screen size. It is fast, cool, and quiet. I love the screen resolution. July 1, 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by Performance Yet to be Determined I have had this notebook for a few days. I purchased it primarily to give me mobile processing for my photographic work when I am on the road. I loaded my various software programs without incident. Connection to the Internet via my in home WiFi seemed to work seamlessly. Unfortunately that did not last and there was a hiccup today when only one website out of the many I tried would function. The on-board diagnostics could not find a problem and the network showed it was connected and running at full strength. Restarting the computer did nothing to solve the problem. Whatever the glitch, it apparently resolved itself while in sleep mode. The fingerprint reader and associated software is a neat tool to control access and website passwords. It is not flawless however. Frequently it takes two or three swipes to read correctly. Still, it is quicker than typing a password and once set up, it can control logins to other websites. While I have not read any technical information regarding the security of the fingerprint reader I presume it is more secure than a password since fingerprints are unique to the individual. The sound system is decent for a notebook and can function effectively for music and movies. A decent compact headphone can make the experience better. The notebook came with Cyberlink software for audio and video play. To date it has been very balky with Blu-ray discs, frequently giving an error message about not being up to date to enable DVD playback. That, however, is not true. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. There is no software update available as it says the software is current. I am not sure what the problem is but I will work it out one way or another. I dislike track pads and this computer's is no different. I purchased a small wireless mouse that integrated easily and which enables effective operation and will travel well. I have not used the Leap Motion function. Other reviews have panned this function as has the leading consumer publication. I may try this function at some point but others feel the concept has value but the actual development is not ready for prime time. The keyboard has some flex but if treated properly it should not pose a problem. The backlit keyboard feature is very well done with pretty even lighting across the board. This will be very handy in poorly lit areas. Overall the computer has lots of storage capacity (2 TB) which is essential to my use, decent RAM (8 GB) but I may add to that, a nice sized screen for developing very detailed photographic images, decent screen resolution, and a size and weight that is pretty impressive given the capability. Like most notebooks it does generate quite a bit of heat. Battery life is an unknown quantity at this time but I will ultimately test in in several operations modes. If HP will allow updates or an additional review I will add to this review at a later date. June 26, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by excellent laptop contrary to others criticism of the keyboard, I find nothing wrong with it all and would not hesitate to buy a 2nd of these. beats sound is very good for a laptop. there is a learning curve to windows 8.1 after using XP & 7. I'm very happy with my purchase so far in these 2 weeks June 25, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by My first Laptop I like the computer, but there is a big learning with Windows 8.1. This in turn has delayed my using of Leap Motion. June 24, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Over all it's a nice machine. This is my 2nd HP notebook. I am going to give HP one more try. My other notebook lasted just a little over 2 years. In my opinion, it should have lasted a while longer than this. I took it to a local repair shop and they told me they couldn't fix it. I called the HP helpline and the person on the other end said that they don't support this model anymore. I'm disappointed that there was nothing I could do about it. It didn't travel much at all. It sat on my table at home and I didn't use it for hours on end. One other point is that my old notebook was solid feeling and my new one feels plastic. I hope my new one lasts longer that the last one or I'll be shopping for my next notebook elsware. June 20, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Unexpected Workmanship I am not a fan of W8...prefer W7....however, as I continue to operate the laptop, I do appreciate W8. What I am not thrilled with, if I close a program from the upper left corner of the screen, it is still open in the back ground and resources are operating, so I am forced to use Task Manager. I do appreciate the APP front page. A lot better than the old scroll in former Windows versions. AND you can customize the categories...making programs you use the most at your fingertips. Also, the heat on the CPU and the lap tops ability to remain cool is the best so far. I am not playing games, just admin and web surfing tasks. It remains cool. This was a nice surprise. I had an HDX 16 HP laptop and heat was horrible. Glad Intel and HP discovered a better way to manage the heat issue. I have however, purchased a Chill Mat with a 160 cm fan....for personal reasons. I don't expect a heat issue :). Otherwise... I like the weight of the 17" Envy, the overall stability, and screen size. I do recommend a touch screen for W8. It will assist in faster decision to operation performance for the user. Also... the mouse pad...requires deliberate pressure to "click" the mouse...and could be smoother. I find this performance annoying as an end user. The LEAP function is cool for the imagination. I wish it could be used like a touch screen reality. Its not, its more like a WII functionality...but its cool to toy with and online games. Not a administration reality which it can be. That is a programmer's goal. LETS" GET IT ON PROGRAMER! That is my honest review. I hope you can appreciate it. May 28, 2014
