Customer ratings and reviews for HP ENVY 17t-j100 Leap Motion QE CTO Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR)

Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Upgrade From Windows Vista! I chose this laptop because I needed to upgrade from a Vista laptop I had since 2008. I was initially concerned about upgrading to a Windows 8 laptop because I'm a PC person, but I heard that Windows 8.1 restored many of the PC features from previous Windows PC's. I'm proud to say that this laptop does not disappoint. One of the main reasons why I chose this particular laptop was that I was able to customize it and it has a 17-inch screen. I'm planning to edit a lot of old home videos and I needed a computer that can handle the processing speed and memory. Thus, I customized this laptop with a Blu-ray burner, 16 GB of RAM, 1080p screen, 2 TB hard drive, etc. I really like the performance and speed of this laptop, such as the i7 processor. The Windows interface is fairly similar to Windows Vista. When the computer first booted up, it went directly to the traditional Windows desktop instead of the new Start menu (with the Windows tiles and apps). I thought this was a great thing because I prefer the traditional Windows desktop experience rather than the Windows tiles and apps. This laptop provided a great transition for me to stay on top of the latest Windows experience. Even though I use the traditional desktop most of the time, I still sometimes click on the Windows icon on the bottom left corner of the desktop to go to the Start menu to use certain apps. Some of the apps I use include Netflix and VEVO. The use of these apps also provide the laptop with a more mobile experience. I also have several programs pinned to the Start menu such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher, etc. I also really like that I can quickly go from the Start menu to the desktop (and back again) by clicking on the Windows icon. I have not tried using the "Leap Motion" feature yet, but for now I don't have a reason for using it because I haven't found any apps that I would like to use for it. The other thing that I have to get used to is that I have to right click on the Windows icon (while on the desktop) in order to gain access to many of the features on previous Windows (such as the control panel, programs, etc.). I'm so used to just clicking the Windows icon to get to the features and inadvertently going to the new Start menu. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase of this laptop and I'm planning on keeping it as long as my previous laptop (5-6 years). March 3, 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by The product has great specifications and features I have been using Microsoft for business and personal needs since the fun DOS days. Back then when upgrading OS you would receive a large manual ( not too mention the dozens of disks) to use. I am going from 7 to 8.1 and the changes are dramatic and the documentation is lacking. I was also surprised that some of the pre-loaded software was recommended by HP customer to be removed. Had the documentation and customer support been better, I am certain I would have given a better rating. February 26, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by smooth and easy purchased an Envy 17 last year with reservation, heard HP was having problems. Buy the fruit brand........ Best laptop to date so I purchased another for the home, happy, happy, happy. Fast, powerful, good not great screen overall happy. February 13, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Everything is great, but.... I did some research regarding the best Windows laptop for editing and creating videos (I'm not a Mac person, already tried that route), and this was one of the top rated in various articles and ratings sites for that purpose. So far I'm very happy with the laptop, except that when I chose the add-on feature of the "Leap Motion" - I should have done my research on that - instead of the spontaneous splurge because it seemed like such a cool idea. I thought it would be this wild new way to control the REGULAR programs and move through the screens etc., but no, it does not interact with the main computer at all - either the standard windows desktop programs or the apps in the Windows 8 desktop. It only works with a specific set of Leap Motion apps that you have to download, some free, some not, and most of them are just games, or essentially frivolous apps that are not really necessary or very functional. You move your hands in a 3-D space above the sensor on the keyboard, to move or manipulate the space in the App - and frankly, the cool factor faded within about a minute of actually trying out these various apps, when I realized the functionality is just very very beta right now. The futuristic element is nowhere near realized, it's incredibly clunky and awkward, and after giving about 5 apps a try to get the feel of it, I regret having paid the extra $$$ for this Leap Motion add on. Save yourself the $$$ and splurge on every other feature for this laptop, memory etc., but not the LEAP motion. It's nothing more than a prematurely released gimmick at this point. February 8, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Pretty awesome overall! Great performance, speakers, screen- all flawless. Only downside is the LEAP motion technology isn't all that impressive, but I do see the potential and look forward to when it is improved/perfected! February 4, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by wheres the bluetooth Great laptop but LEAP technology is a bit confusing so I should have gotten a touch screen instead. And who in the world puts a laptop together and doesn't include Bluetooth? I was really disappointed to find out while I was setting up the laptop that it has no bluetooth. January 26, 2014
